The Republican: “Quaboag schools adding solar panels”

Lori Stabile, December 14, 2010. WARREN – Work has begun on installing solar panels on the three schools within the Quaboag Regional School District, an initiative that could potentially save approximately $1 million over the next 20 years in electricity costs.

Superintendent Brett M. Kustigian said the multi-million-dollar project is being done at no cost to the district, which serves the towns of Warren and West Brookfield. He said the roofs are being rented for the next 20 years by Boston Community Capital and that the company is paying for the panels.

Boston Globe: “Tax cut bill could aid Cape Wind”

Measure extends renewable energy credit from ’09

Mark Arsenault and Beth Daley, December 11, 2010. WASHINGTON — The enhanced federal tax cut package expected to be voted on next week could include a windfall for Cape Wind and other renewable energy projects around the country.

The bill, released Thursday night in the Senate and widely distributed yesterday, extends a renewable energy credit worth up to 30 percent of a new project’s cost. The credit, introduced in 2009 as part of the Obama administration’s stimulus bill, originally applied only to projects under construction by the end of this year.

[...] “The extension is very important to the solar industry in Massachusetts,’’ said Dan Leary, president of Nexamp, a North Andover clean energy company that designs and installs solar arrays and has the state’s largest public contract to outfit water and waste-water treatment plants. “For people who want to invest in clean energy, it rewards them by putting cash in their hand now as opposed to waiting for better times down the road when they develop taxable income.’’ Link to Article

Boston Globe: “US funds to boost energy savings”

Area businesses vie for share of project

Kathleen Conti, December 2, 2010. More than two dozen Merrimack Valley businesses will benefit from federal stimulus funds to improve their energy emissions in what could be a statewide model for mobilizing the private sector to increase participation in efficiency initiatives.

Energy audits of buildings will be provided for up to 25 companies selected by the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce, funded with $500,000 of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money recently awarded to the chamber through the state Department of Energy Resource’s High Performance Buildings initiative.

[...] Joseph J. Bevilacqua, president and chief executive of the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce, said the funding, which runs until April 2012, has attracted applications from myriad local business owners interested in saving on energy costs to help their bottom lines during this slow economy. In partnership with Nexamp Inc., a North Andover renewable-energy consulting company, the chamber already has filled half of the slots, while other proposals are still being considered, Bevilacqua said. Chelmsford Independent: “Solar array to provide green energy savings”

Monica Jimenez, November 29, 2010. CHELMSFORD—Chelmsford residents, raise your drinking glasses to the new energy supplier who could be bringing you your water as early as this week. This newcomer, who’s signed on to power the pipelines of the Chelmsford Water District, also happens to be the older than the Earth.

The Chelmsford Water District will soon be the proud owner and operator of Massachusetts’ largest groundwater solar array. After a two-year project that combined the resources of the district, the EPA, MassDEP, UMass Lowell and the Nexamp company, the array’s infrastructure and software are in place and running – all that’s needed now is a green light. South Coast Today / The Advocate: “Solar panels going up at three DPW buildings”

Peggy Aulisio, November 18, 2010. FAIRHAVEN — Solar panels were installed at the West Island Satellite Treatment Plant this week. That’s one down and two more to go.

Solar panels are also being installed at the Fairhaven Board of Public Works building and the Sludge Building being built on Arsene Street. Work on the DPW building is expected to begin later this week or early next week, depending on the weather.

Geoff Haworth, chairman of the Fairhaven Board of Public Works, said the projects were undertaken “to make our wastewater plant as energy efficient as possible. With this grant for the solar panels, we are doing our part to promote locally generated, non-polluting energy.”

Mr. Haworth said the solar panels will save Fairhaven ratepayers $15,000 a year. He said, once completed, the 102.7-kW solar project should generate enough electricity annually to offset approximately 179,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.

Spruce Environmental Technologies Goes Greener with Solar Array

Nexamp Wins Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Award for the Northeast Region

Boston Globe: “Boston discounts fees for projects with solar”

Hiawatha Bray, November 1, 2010. As a program of direct federal subsidies for solar power projects winds down, the city of Boston is picking up some of the slack locally with a new ordinance that cuts building permit fees for developers who include solar systems in their projects.

[...] “Every cent helps,’’ said Jon Abe, senior vice president of Nexamp Inc., a solar power contractor in North Andover.

Abe said that solar power subsidies included in the 2009 federal economic stimulus bill are running dry, and additional cash injections are unlikely. The $787 billion federal economic stimulus included $21 billion in subsidies for solar and wind power plants. “We expect that that money will no longer be available in the future,’’ Abe said.

But he added that his company expects to prosper anyway. A separate federal tax credit program for solar power projects will remain available through 2016, said Abe. Link to Article
