Merrimack Valley Businesses: Receive Clean Energy Advisory Services through Nexamp and Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce's Clean Energy Partnership

Nexamp is excited to announce a new partnership with the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce (MVCC) to help area businesses explore their clean energy options. A limited number of MVCC member organizations will be selected to receive comprehensive clean energy advisory services provided by Nexamp.

Supported with funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (through the Mass Department of Energy Resources High-Performance Buildings grant program) along with cost shares from MVCC and Nexamp, the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce Clean Energy Partnership will help members increase their competitiveness by identifying short-term energy savings and implementing energy management practices for the long term.

How It Works

  • Participant selection: MVCC and Nexamp will reach out to a diverse group of member organizations and businesses to see which 1) might benefit the most from these services and 2) are committed to implementing energy reduction measures. Members that wish to be considered should visit www.nexamp.com/mvcep. Approximately twenty-six members will be selected for the program.
  • Customized Clean Energy Road Map reporting: Following a detailed Nexamp-conducted energy audit, Nexamp will provide the selected members with a customized Clean Energy Road Map that provides an in-depth assessment of the energy savings and financial performance (return on investment, payback, risk, and cash flow) anticipated for potential clean energy investments at their facilities.
  • Energy monitoring: Nexamp will supplement the Road Map with energy monitoring and building energy labeling to promote ongoing energy planning and identification of future energy savings opportunities.
  • Retrocommissioning: To ensure that immediate energy and maintenance savings benefits are realized, Nexamp will also provide retrocommissioning for suitable buildings. Retrocommissioning optimizes how individual equipment systems function, and how they interact with each other for maximum energy efficiency.
  • Additional project implementation: Members may choose to work with Nexamp to implement additional solutions identified in the Clean Energy Road Map.

SunSetter Products Completes Major Energy Improvements

Solar photovoltaic panels, energy-efficient lighting installed by Nexamp to dramatically reduce SunSetter's energy costs

SunSetter's high-efficiency lighting

Nexamp has recently completed extensive renewable energy and energy efficiency improvements for SunSetter Products, the largest manufacturer of retractable residential awnings in the US.

The improvements to SunSetter's 64,000 square foot facility include upgrading existing lighting to energy-efficient lighting fixtures and the installation of two solar photovoltaic systems totaling 63 kilowatts (kW) on its roof.

"We are very excited about this investment in green energy," said Ido Eilam, CEO of SunSetter. "It's like closing a circle: we are using the sun's energy to protect consumers from the sun. We use solar energy in our manufacturing process; consumers use our awnings to protect them from the harmful UV rays and heat of the sun, and we both reduce our carbon footprint and help the environment. It's a win-win proposition."

SunSetter's solar PV array

On an annual basis, SunSetter expects to generate about 138,000 kWh of electricity from the sun, which will reduce the amount of electricity it purchases from the utility by 35-40%. It expects to see a return on its investment in less than five years. Additionally, SunSetter's high-efficiency lighting upgrade is expected to reduce the company's lighting-related electricity costs by approximately 50%, saving $9,300 annually while improving overall lighting levels.

"By taking a comprehensive approach to their energy strategy, SunSetter is making a well-informed investment in its future. Reducing energy costs with clean energy solutions like high-efficiency lighting and solar electricity will help the company keep its product costs low," said Dan Leary, President of Nexamp. "Nexamp is honored to have been chosen by SunSetter to design and implement these extensive clean energy improvements."

On February 5, as part of the Patrick-Murray Administration's Massachusetts Recovery Plan, Governor Deval Patrick announced federal stimulus-funded contracts for Nexamp and its partner, Florence Electric, to install 4.1 megawatts (MW) of solar energy at 12 public water and wastewater treatment facilities throughout the Commonwealth. The contracts are worth approximately $20 million in funding from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the state's largest-ever award for solar installation at public facilities.

Making good on his promise of a clean energy future in Massachusetts, Governor Patrick noted that the investment in Nexamp is yet another success for what has become a "vibrant solar industry" in Massachusetts.

"We look forward to optimizing the Massachusetts solar stimulus funding to provide long-term savings to each of the sites while creating skilled, green-collar jobs," said Nexamp President Dan Leary.

In all, the completed solar installations are expected to save these facilities nearly $650,000 per year, cutting energy consumption by nearly 4.5 million kilowatt hours--about the amount required to power 600 households.

New Venture Financing Means Growth for Nexamp

Nexamp has recently secured Series A financing worth $6.5 million. Initially announced in February, the financing comes from three major venture partners: Good Energies, one of the world's leading private investors in renewable energy and clean technologies; Point Judith Capital, an early-state venture capital firm with a focus on information technology; RCG Ventures, an early stage clean energy investment firm; as well as individual investors.

"Nexamp's outstanding management team, robust business model, and demonstrated growth potential in the clean energy market align closely with Good Energies portfolio investment criteria," said Michael Ware, a Managing Director at Good Energies.

David Martirano, General Partner at Point Judith Capital, said:"The clean energy sector is the next frontier for information technology. Nexamp has not only become a leading provider of clean energy solutions, but has developed innovative, IT-based tools for identifying and implementing cost-effective, customized energy solutions for organizations."

"Looking ahead, I am confident that Nexamp will continue to excel as the premier clean energy solutions company in New England and, eventually, the nation," said HC Bailly, Managing Partner of RCG Ventures and chairman of Nexamp's Board of Directors. Martirano and Ware join Bailly on the Board, along with Stuart R Patterson, who succeeds Bailly as the new CEO of Nexamp.

Dan Leary, Nexamp's President and COO, noted the importance of the funding in helping Nexamp "capitalize on our extraordinary momentum in providing state-of-the-art, technology-based, clean energy solutions to valued customers across the nation."

In joining the Nexamp team as Commercial Sales Manager, Brad Hunter brings with him nearly 20 years of experience in the clean energy field. His decision to enter the industry was driven by what he feels is a common thread among his peers--a shared desire to make a meaningful, positive impact on the world.

"For me, it is satisfying to know that I'm affecting even a small change on our environment," says Brad.

As a project engineer for XENERGY, Brad worked to design and install energy-efficient lighting solutions for various commercial institutions, including Sing Sing Correctional Facility and the SUNY school system. Later in his career, at Nexus, he worked with Fortune 500 companies to implement web-based energy efficiency software. And now, at Nexamp, he is excited to be managing numerous commercial renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

"What I love about being in clean tech is the spirit of camaraderie among a relatively small, but growing, tight-knit group of people with a common goal," he says.

Brad has worked hard to share that camaraderie with his clients, along with the understanding that working with Nexamp truly is a partnership. "I always want to work with prospective customers to gain an acute understanding of their energy needs and goals, so that when I walk into that office for the first time, I can be confident that Nexamp is providing them with the best possible solution."

His high standards, mirrored by those of the Nexamp, have been a formula for success. As Brad says: "The product that I'm providing is more than just a solar energy system; it's the expertise of all the people who design, install, and service that system. It's the commitment and dedication of all the people who stand behind that system. Because of that, I know that the product I am selling is superior to any other competing product. So, my job is very simple."

Aside from his excitement about helping Nexamp continue its rapid growth, Brad looks forward to earning LEEP AP status and getting involved in the Green Build 11 Conference Planning Committee in the coming year.

Nexamp is very fortunate to have Brad join the team, and encourages businesses and organizations to get in touch with him for any of their clean energy project needs.
