Nashoba Valley Technical High School Enters into Solar Power Purchase Agreement with Nexamp

nashobaNashoba Valley Technical High School has taken command of its own energy efficiency future with the installation of a 101-kW solar photovoltaic system. Completed by Nexamp in early November, 506 solar panels make up the large solar installation.

"This system will allow the school to meet the district's goal of becoming as energy efficient as possible while staying on budget," said School Superintendent Judith Klimkiewicz.  Because this project is a power purchase agreement, the school is able to use its own roof to obtain solar-generated electricity without having to own a single solar panel. Instead, Nexamp will own and operate the system, and the school will purchase the clean electricity produced at a low, predictable rate.

This project had the added benefit of nashoba studentsproviding the students at Nashoba Valley Tech with some great hands-on experience. Students were able to learn first hand the process of installing solar panels. Other students will be able to monitor the real time energy output through Nexamp's web-based data acquisition system.

According to Klimkiewicz, the solar system is expected to offset 10 percent of the school's $220,000 annual electricity bill. "Going green is an extension of the school's constant effort to best maintain its building," she said.

Number of Geothermal Heating and Cooling Installations Continues to Rise in New England

The cold winter is upon us again, geothermal but comes on the heels of a huge spike in the number of geothermal heating and cooling systems installed in Fall 2009, according to Nexamp's geothermal expert, Damien Morinon.  He credits a number of factors in explaining the increasing demand for efficient geothermal systems. "More than being just eco-friendly, geothermal heating and cooling is also becoming the smart choice economically," he says.

geopipesOne Nexamp geothermal customer remarked: "Installing a geothermal heating and cooling system is like striking oil in my backyard. In fact, it is better than striking oil, because the free energy coming from the earth is clean." Nexamp's turnkey service also gives customers the confidence of reliability in our dedicated managers and their promise to deliver a high-quality, low-maintenance system, keeping costs to a minimum and ensuring longevity, all backed by the Nexamp warranty.

A geothermal heat pump (GHP) providesdamien affordable heating and cooling for your home and replaces a conventional HVAC system (most commonly, a furnace and air conditioner) by harnessing the earth's constant moderate temperature.

"With the new federal tax credit covering 30% of the cost to install a geothermal heating and cooling system, we are able to offer our clients a substantial rate of return on their clean energy investment," said Morinon.

RiverWoods at Exeter Completes Renewable Energy Planning and Implementation Process

When RiverWoods at Exeter moved ahead with the expansion of its retirement community in Exeter, NH, the facility owners wanted to reduce the environmental impacts of its soon-to-be constructed Boulders complex. The company called on Nexamp to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of the renewable energy opportunities at the site. RiverWoods was drawn to Nexamp for its broad approach to evaluating renewable technologies--called its Clean Energy Road Map--as well as the company's ability to provide turnkey installation services.

The process began with a full review of the technical and economic potential for integrating solar photovoltaics, solar hot water, and wind power technologies at the future site of the 214,000 square-foot campus.  Nexamp used its Road Map tool to analyze nine different renewable energy applications and determine which were the most appropriate and cost effective for RiverWoods. With those findings, Nexamp worked with RiverWoods and its team of contractors to conduct installations alongside the primary building construction. Together, the two solar hot water projects will save the new Boulders complex an estimated 2,825 therms of natural gas annually.

Efficient Lighting: Are T5 Lamps the answer?

by Samantha Russem
LC, LEED AP, Nexamp Lighting Project Manager
(This article also appeared in High-Profile Monthly,
October 8, 2009)

Green...Energy Efficiency...Conservation...Big Savings! With so many energy buzz words being thrown around, many people feel like they must participate in the green boom or they'll be left behind. In the residential market, self-ballasted compact fluorescents and LEDs are keeping consumers busy as they try to determine how they can save energy while making a difference in the world. In the commercial and industrial market, end users are focused on the bottom line. Even with this difference in perspective, the same question looms over both sides: can being more energy efficient really save money? The answer is unequivocally, "yes," but how do we get there?

Featured Nexamp Employee:
Palmer Moore

damien

Regional Sales Manager Palmer Moore has been a part of the Nexamp team since January 2009.  Formerly employed as a designer in the high-end, custom yacht market, Palmer has made the successful transition into the clean energy sector.

When asked about his transition, Palmer said, "In this industry you have to come in with a lot of passion, energy, and the resolve to work through inevitable challenges. The nice part about the clean energy sector is that you are not limited to one specific group of clientele. Everyone has to pay their utility bills."

With Palmer's help, the market for clean energy has successfully expanded into southern  Massachusetts. Nexamp has opened an office in Plymouth, MA,  to better serve the South Shore and Cape Cod areas, where Palmer will be the lead sales associate. Palmer received his BS&E in Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan.
